Dante Torres (Benjamin Levy Aguilar) is here. The rookie officer made a splash in the episode “New Guard”, whether it be his tenacity in the field or his ability to infiltrate local gangs. The latter raised some red flags for the rest of IU, though, making Torres’ future with the team unclear.

Conversely, Torres got the lion’s share of screen time during the episode, which would be an odd choice if he’s quickly written out of show or intended to be a single story character. This differing read has led some fans to question whether he’s going to stick around for the long term.

Here’s what you need to know about Torres on Chicago PD.

Who is the new guy on Chicago PD?

Torres gets taken under the wing of Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer), who notes that the kind has talent but is also leery of the fact that he struggles to follow orders. He ignores Halstead’s orders twice, which looks even more alarming when the IU is told that a rat may have infiltrated the team.

Torres’ background and familiarity with the street gang the team is pursuing makes him seem the most obvious suspect, and Voight (Jason Beghe) goes as far as to confront the rookie about his intentions at the end of the episode.

It’s here, however, that Torres explains his desire to get revenge on the stepfather who abused his mother growing up. He wanted to become a cop to protect those in need, like his mother, and the plea to emotion seemed to connect with Voight, who shrugged off his suspicions. At least, for the time being.

So what is Torres’ future? Well, the showrunners and cast have been quiet regarding the character but all signs point to him sticking around. The show has made a habit of introducing newcomers to the IU every couple seasons, and it’s been quite a while since the last member joined.

Torres would bring a fresh approach to the team and an unpredictability that could bring out new conflicts with the established characters. Expect to see the rookie for the rest of season 9, and depending on the events of the finale, beyond that.
