Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) was at the heart of the latest Chicago PD episode. He led the investigation into the murder of a wealthy man, and while the bulk of the story focused on his detective skills, there was some crucial insights into his personal life.

Namely, his season 9 relationship with Celeste (Amanda Payton). The pair hit it off immediately, but things when sour when Celeste discovered that Atwater had been hiding his profession from her.

Here’s what happened in the latest episode and what it means for the couple’s future.

Atwater tries to rekindle his relationship in Chicago PD

Atwater has been single since Celeste broke up with him, and this is reinforced by the fact that he’s been casually dating. At one point, he tries to get a woman to go home with him, but his actions suggest that he’s still not over the emotional scars of the Celeste relationship.

While it’s a minor scene, Atwater is shown leaving a voicemail for Celeste in the episode “Fool’s Gold”. It’s an incredibly revealing message, and hints at how long he’s been harboring feelings for her. The message is as follows:

"“Hey, Celeste. It’s Kevin, again. Just giving you my weekly call, trying to see if you’re ready to talk. You know, whenever you are, I’m right here. Miss you.”"

Celeste not wanting to communicate with Atwater makes sense, given his penchant for being dishonest. There’s a lot that’s going to have to be overcome if they are going to give it another shot, and Atwater is fully aware of this. Furthermore, he’s going to have to prove himself to be open and completely transparent with Celeste moving forward.

The main plot, which involves a woman and her attempt to escape the influence of her psychotic ex-boyfriend, is a perfect example of a relationship gone wrong, and while there are never direct parallels made between the ex and Atwater, they way they serve as opposites cannot be missed.

We all know Atwater to be a decent guy, and while he shouldn’t have kept his job a secret, we can understand why he felt it was important to establish himself as a person to Celeste, and not just a cop. We’d be interested in seeing the couple to reunite, but even if they don’t, it’s important that Atwater to make peace with his profession.
