Gabby Dawson (Monica Raymund) is near and dear to the hearts of Chicago Fire audiences. She was a force during her tenure on the show, whether she was saving lives or engaging in a doomed romance with Casey (Jesse Spencer).

The character’s departure in season 6 left many fans saddened, but her brief return in season 8 suggested that she could return when we least expect her. The hope, of course, is that Gabby could make another appearance in the near future, but recent comments from showrunners suggest that we won’t be seeing her anytime soon.

Here’s what you need to know about Gabby’s future on Chicago Fire.

Is Gabby Dawson coming back to Chicago Fire?

The question of Gabby’s return became more pertinent when it was confirmed that Severide (Taylor Kinney) and Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) would be getting married in the season 10 finale. Gabby was close to both characters, so her making a reappearance to support her old friends makes a lot of sense.

Unfortunately, Fire showrunner Derek Haas shot down the possibility of Gabby’s return during an interview with Deadline. When asked, Haas cited scheduling conflicts as the main reason that the character won’t be back.

"“I actually spoke to Monica [on Monday], she’s directing an episode of my friend’s upcoming TV series National Treasure“, the showrunner noted. “So she’s busy. She’s been directing a lot. She’s put Dawson behind her. Andrea and I convinced her to come back a few times but I don’t think she’s going to come back anytime soon.”"

The note about keeping the door open for Gabby’s return is encouraging, but pointing out Raymund’s desire to put the character “behind her” suggests that she won’t be planning on returning to the 51 for a while (if ever). It’s a shame that fans won’t get to see Gabby and Casey reunite, but it does allow for more screen time between Casey and Brett (Kara Killmer), who has been absent from the last few episodes.

There will be so many additional plot threads involving Stellaride and Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso) that Gabby’s absence may turn out to be better for the finale. For all intents and purposes, Gabby’s story arc has been resolved, and seeing her return without a major reason could cheapen her involvement.

In all, we’re confident that Haas and company know what they’re doing and will give us the season 10 finale we deserve.
