Did Hailey Upton die on Chicago PD? (SPOILERS)
Nobody saw this one coming. There have been lots of close calls throughout the ninth season of Chicago PD, but none of the signs pointed to Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) being a target. None, until the episode “House of Cards”.
The episode spent most of its runtime on the IU as they try to take down local crime lord Escano (Jose Zuniga). Given the proximity that Anna Avalos (Carmela Zumbado) had to the crime lord, and her undercover status, it seemed like she was a prime target if anything went wrong.
Then the final act unfolded. The entire IU circled Escano’s operation and engaged in a firefight with his men. Upton, along with Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and Ruzek (Patrick Flueger), circle around a foot soldier, not knowing that he had an explosive device rigged. The device went off, taking out all three officers.
Is Upton leaving Chicago PD?
Post-explosion, we see Halstead and Ruzek recover with some minor cuts and bruises. Upton, on the other hand, is not so lucky. As the camera follows Halstead’s perspective, we see that Upton is still laying on the ground. She appears to be unconscious and unresponsive, and before we see the rest of the team react, the episode cuts to black and ends.
What gives? Is Upton dead? Is Halstead going to have to avenge his murdered wife?
Thankfully, the answer is no. Upton is not dead, and she made a surprisingly speedy recovery in the season 9 finale, “You and Me”. She was up on her feet in the opening scene, and partook in all of the scenes involving the IU as they tried to track to down Escano.

The finale really emphasized the dynamic between Voight and Anna, and Upton took more of a supporting role in the story that unfolded. That said, she played a major role in the final scene, as she took out her weapon and shot down Anna after the informant wounded Voight.
It was a shocking way to wrap things up, and somewhat tragic, given that Upton wanted to avoid a situation similar to the Ray Walton incident in season 8. In both instances, however, she was forced to kill people who were aiming for her boss.
