Chicago PD is gearing up for some dramatic moments in the season 9 finale. The previous episode, “House of Cards” hinted at the possibility that one of the cops, Upton (Tracy Spiridakos), will die as a result of being caught in an explosion.

The show has always been good about keeping the fates of their characters under wraps until the last possible moment, but fans were lucky enough to get some insight into the season finale from actors LaRoyce Hawkins and Patrick Flueger.

Here’s what the onscreen officers had to say about Chicago PD.

Who dies in the Chicago PD season 9 finale?

When asked to give an update about Upton’s status, Flueger told TV Insider that fans needn’t worry. “Who gets rid of Tracy Spiridakos from a show? You just don’t do it”, he explained. “Also, we’d all be very sad on set because she brings the light.”

The confirmation that the character will survive is a big one, as the show made it devastatingly ambiguous as to whether she would live to see another case. It’s a relief, especially given how recent her marriage to Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) occurred. As Flueger rightfully pointed out, Upton is arguably the greatest source of hope in the entire IU, so losing her would have been tough.

Hawkins piggybacked on Flueger’s comments and said, somewhat comically, that the members of the IU are especially resilient when it comes to surviving deadly injuries. He then went on to cite a few of the hardships that he and the rest of the team have had to shake off.

"“Historically we’ve seen this unit take so much abuse whether it’s explosions, nine millimeter bullets to the gut, car crashes and accidents”, he noted. “And I’m not sure if our audience has figured this out yet, but we’re Intelligence. One of us is worth at least six regular cops.”"

Granted, making sure your main characters survive is a common TV practice, but it is impressive when one steps back and considers how many close calls have occurred. The comments made by both actors are encouraging as well, as they suggest none of the core IU members will die by the end of the season.

Of course, that means people like Anna Avalos (Carmela Zumbado), the villainous Javier Escano (Jose Zuniga), are still fair game.
