Chicago PD: LaRoyce Hawkins teases Celeste’s return

We all know that Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) struggles in the romance department. The cop has had a string of tough break ups over the course of Chicago PD, but none sting more than his recent split from Celeste (Amanda Payton).

Atwater’s decision to keep his profession a secret led to Celeste calling it quits, despite their close bond. In the episodes since her departure, Atwater has been seen calling and leaving messages on her phone, but it remains to be seen whether she will return.

Here’s what you need to know about Celeste’s future.

What happened to Celeste on Chicago PD?

LaRoyce Hawkins discussed the uncertainty of his character’s romantic prospect during a recent interview with TV Line. The actor makes it clear that Atwater will need to show significant growth if he’s going to find any sort of lasting happiness.

"“Atwater definitely needs love, but he’s also not wanting to force anything”, he stated. “You can’t force a vibe. If it was meant to be, it will be… When we find Atwater in his next situation, as we watch him play the field moving forward, he’ll be a lot more vulnerable.”"

Hawkins went on to say that he’d “love” to see Celeste return, given the chemistry the two characters had, and he thinks it’d be interesting to see both of them work through the issues that initially led to their split.

"“If [Celeste] has a hard time understanding his intentions behind why he couldn’t be as vulnerable with her as she probably would like for him to be, he has to take that and keep growing from it…”, he added. “When we find Atwater in his next situation, as we watch him play the field moving forward, he’ll be a lot more vulnerable.”"

As to Celeste’s impact, Hawkins made it clear that she will always be a part of the character and his romantic live moving forward. “Celeste will always be a big part of Atwater”, he admitted. “We’ll see her in the decisions that he makes moving forward. She’s going to have a hold on him a little bit.”

This aspect of Atwater’s character will be fascinating to see play out, especially when you consider the possibility that he move on with another established character: Zora Scott (Deanne Lauvin). As the sibling of Chicago Med‘s Dr. Scott (Guy Lockard) and a fellow police officer, Zora would be a complete change from Celeste and an exciting new challenge for the character.
