The Dick Wolf universe is sprawling. There have been dozens of procedural shows released under the producer’s banner, with smaller franchises packed within them.

The FBI and the One Chicago franchises, as well as their respective spinoffs, are two of the most popular examples, so it makes sense that fans would be curious about their connections.

Here’s what you need to know about the two franchises and how they’re supposed to be connected.

Are FBI and One Chicago connected?

Simply put, FBI and One Chicago take place within the same universe. The crimes that the characters investigate unfold alongside one another, and there have been instances where characters are forced to crossover to solve a case.

Mini-crossovers are common for FBI, meaning that characters will frequently appear on FBI, FBI: International and FBI: Most Wanted, and the same can be said for the big three One Chicago titles. These types of crossovers establish a consistency to the universe, making it feel as though its all part of a master narrative.

Less common, though perhaps more exciting, are the big crossovers between franchises. The first time FBI and One Chicago crossed paths was in 2020, when the FBI episode “Emotional Rescue” aired on CBS. Not only was the episode directed by Chicago Fire alum Monica Raymund, but it had a notable appearance by Chicago PD‘s Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos).

While the prospect of the additional crossovers is thrilling, FBI showrunner Derek Haas has said that it’s tougher to align different locations and different FBI offices. He said that, by comparison, having all three One Chicago shows in the same city makes their crossovers more organic.

"“It was so much more work than when we do the Chicago ones”, he told TV Insider. “Just even having the bad guy go all the way through the three episodes, get him to Hungary. You’ve got jet lag issues. You’ve got working hours issues. It was way harder than even the hardest Chicago crossover that we’ve done.”"

Despite the difficulty FBI has had in getting all three squads together, the fact that we’ve gotten to see them connect with One Chicago establishes that they are all connected, and that a crossover is possible at any point, as long as the logic of the story allows for it.
