Emily Choi (Arden Cho) has had a troublesome life. Her stint may have been brief on Chicago Med, but her tense relationship with her brother, Ethan (Brian Tee), has been one of the most impactful sibling arcs in the entire show.

Of course, given the unpredictable nature of the character, it’s tough to gage whether she will be returning to Med anytime soon. Here’s what you need to know about Emily, the actress who plays her, and whether she’ll be spotted in season 8.

What happened to Emily Choi on Chicago Med?

Emily was introduced in season 3 and had spent the bulk of her previous appearances trying to sort through feelings towards her brother.

It was assumed that she had moved to Las Vegas, but the episode “The Tipping Point” revealed that she’d actually stayed in Chicago and been relegated to a homeless camp. When Ethan found her she was severely ill, and upon being treated, it was discovered that she had contracted hepatitis.

Fortunately, Ethan helps treat Emily and the rest of the people at the homeless camp who also had the disease. The episode ends with Emily on the rebound, though not much is stated about her plans for the future or her desire to move away from the Windy City.

It wasn’t until her return in season 4 that we were filled in on her life. It turns out she finally made the move to Las Vegas, and while there, had started a family. When she comes back to visit Ethan, its revealed that she has a child with her boyfriend Bernie (C.S. Lee). Things take an unconventional route, and the last time we see or hear from Emily, she’s moving in with Bernie, Bernie’s wife, and his other daughter.

It’s a far cry from the traditional family that we see in most shows, and Ethan is understandably skeptical that it will pan out. Surprisingly, though, we never get an update on how Emily is doing. Little has been said about her since season 4, despite there being lots of dramatic directions for her story to take.

While we’d love to see Emily return in season 8, the show has taken on so many directions and subplots that there may not be enough room. Ethan is just starting to getting his footing back as a character, after missing most of season 7, and so dedicating some of his screen time to a sibling we haven’t seen in multiple seasons might not be the way to go.

While we maintain hope that Emily will come back at some point, nothing from the cast or the writing team suggests that it will take place in season 8. We will have to continue to wait to find out Emily’s fate.
