Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) is the heart of Chicago Med. The character is always on hand to provide perspective and to aid the various patients and physicians that come through Gaffney Medical Center.

That being said, Maggie is not above drama of her own. The character went through quite a bit in season 7, both in her personal life and her professional life. There’s even been some concern from fans  that she died at one point…

Here’s what you need to know about Maggie and her brush with death.

Did Maggie die on Chicago Med?

For starters, Maggie Lockwood is alive and well. She’s had some close calls over the years, but the most concerning thing she’s had to deal with was her diagnosis in season 5. She agreed to donate her kidney to a woman with cancer, but the procedure led to her discovering that she also suffered from metastatic adenocarcinoma, or metastatic breast cancer.

Maggie decided to keep her diagnosis a secret from her co-workers, as she wanted to be treated the way she always had been. While , actress Marlyne Barrett said that the plot thread was an emotionally significant one for her, given that both her parents had dealt with cancer.

"“I approached Maggie with bravado”, Barrett told Black America Web. “She could eat metal, like Superwoman. She definitely had moments of humility, but she never had moments of frailty. The moment I heard it took me aback because my mom is a survivor.”"

Maggie hasn’t been in mortal danger since season 5, but she has still had to deal with the fallout of her cancer diagnosis. Barrett looked back on the character’s journey during an interview with CinemaBlend.

"“Maggie recovered from an illness that was very traumatic, and then at the same time, is it something that she’s completely recovered from?” she asked. “How do you live with the shadow of the possibility of getting ill again? And I think Maggie constantly has that little presence there.”"

Maggie may be in the clear once season 8 starts up, but the actress does bring up some compelling points regarding the character’s future. It’s a strong possibility that the cancer could return, and if so, create some devastating emotional consequences for both her and her daughter Vanessa (Asjha Cooper).

Of course, we hope this isn’t the case, and that the writers choose to give Maggie a new slate of storylines and dramatic situations to deal with.
