Why did Teri Reeves leave Chicago Fire?

Dr. Hallie Thomas (Teri Reeves) was a standout character during the first stint of Chicago Fire. She quickly got into a relationship with Casey (Jesse Spencer), and what looked to be a longterm union came to a tragic end with Thomas was killed.

Her death, which came after being violently struck in the head, was a devastating loss for both the fans and Casey. It was unexpected, and barring the death of Darden (Corey Sorenson) in the series premiere, it was a first in terms of seeing main characters bite the dust.

Why did Hallie Thomas leave Chicago Fire?

While some One Chicago exits have been fueled by behind the scenes drama or falling outs with the cast and crew (PD‘s Sophia Bush is probably the most notable example), nothing like that went down with actress Teri Reeves. She got on famously with her peers, and only positive things have been said about her since she left the show.

Rather, the reason she left the show was a creative decision on the part of the Chicago Fire staff. The writers felt that a major character death was needed to shake things up, and establish how dangerous the lives of the various doctors and firefighters on the show can be.

It’s a practice that would go on to become commonplace for One Chicago fans, but Dr. Thomas’s death was a genuine shock when it happened in the season 1 episode “Leaders Lead.” Things got even more shocking when it was revealed that Thomas had been murdered.

While fans may miss Thomas and another fallen character, Leslie Shay (Lauren German) they can take solace in the fact that the actors who played them got a chance to reunite on Lucifer. Reeves appeared on a 2021 episode of the fantasy series, and got a chance to play opposite main cast member German.
