Chicago PD: Is the show ending after season 10?
Chicago PD is on the cusp on a milestone. Few shows manage to stay on the air for a decade, and yet, PD will be coming back with its tenth season in September. It’s an exciting time to be a fan of Voight (Jason Beghe) and the gang, but it also raises questions about the future.
The show is at coming to the end of its current renewal deal with NBC, so there is some curiosity as to whether it will continue to air or will wrap up after this upcoming season.
Here’s what we know about the future of PD.
Has Chicago PD been cancelled?
For starters, the show is in a great place. The ratings have been consistent for most of its run, and it has been placed right behind Chicago Fire (the most important title in the franchise) since it first aired. Deadline reports that the season 9 finale pulled in a strong 5.8 million viewers, which means its still among the steadiest performers that NBC has.
PD, along with Fire and Chicago Med, received a multi-season renewal from the network in 2020, which is only something that occurs when a network is completely confident in a project. There’s an established fanbase for the One Chicago franchise, and looking beyond that, there’s a sense that any show that has the Wolf Productions logo will succeed in the long term.

It’s a testament to what producer Dick Wolf has achieved that a show that’s about to hit a decade on the air doesn’t come close to other long-running titles like Law and Order and Law and Order: SVU, both of which have been going on for two-plus decades.
If there’s anyone who knows to make television shows last, it’s Dick Wolf, and given how much the network has put into the various components of the One Chicago universe (Chicago Justice being the one odd failure), then we’re are guaranteed to see a renewal come through soon, with a guarantee that Chicago PD will be back for several more seasons.
