9-1-1 is a thrilling procedural series that follows the lives of paramedics, police officers and firefighters. It’s a franchise with multiple installments, and it frequently places its characters in terrifying (also thrilling) situations.

This is a long-winded way of saying that 9-1-1 has a lot in common with the One Chicago franchise. The topic and tone are very similar, with the biggest distinction being that the former takes place in Los Angeles.

Let’s do a deep dive on the two franchises and determine whether they exist in the same TV universe.

Is 9-1-1 part of the One Chicago universe?

The speculation regarding a potential crossover between 9-1-1 and One Chicago started when 9-1-1 Lone Star actor Brian Michael Smith talked about his character’s roots. He told Assignment X that his character hailed from Chicago, and that his midwest origin was a big part of the choices he made onscreen.

Naturally, the connections between Smith’s character, Paul, and a potential backstory involving the characters of Chicago PD or Chicago Fire could work like gangbusters and bring these two juggernaut franchises together in spectacular fashion.

Unfortunately, there’s little hope for the crossover at this point in time. As of 2022, the two shows exist on different networks, and do no exist in the same universe. 9-1-1 is also headed up by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, whereas the One Chicago universe is helmed by Dick Wolf Productions.

Thankfully, there’s no shortage of crossover television events. Law & Order recently announced that it would be staging a crossover between all three of its shows, and One Chicago showrunners have hinted at a similar crossover later in the upcoming season.
