Chicago Fire is an institution at this point. The show has been on for a decade, and is gearing up for the release of its 11th season on NBC. That’s an achievement for any franchise, let alone one that has two other titles (including one, PD, that’s about the cross the decade mark as well).

That being said, there seems to be regular curiosity about when the show started. We wanted to set the record straight on the exact year and date, as well as distinguish it from another famous fire that took place in Chicago…

When did the Great Chicago Fire start?

Chicago Fire, the show, premiered on October 10, 2012. The episode drew strong audience and critical response, with many commending the chemistry between the cast. The show drew higher and higher ratings over the course of the first season, and by the time it wrapped, it was regularly crossing the 7 million viewers mark.

The great discrepancy when it comes to internet searches, however, is how often the show gets conflated and confused with the Great Chicago Fire, given how close their names are. The first is fictional, obviously, and the second has gone down as arguably the most famous fire in American history.

The Great Chicago Fire also started in October, ironically. The blaze that took out 3.3 miles of the city started on October 8, 1871 and raged on for two days. Despite the blaze being put out on the tenth of October, it took several more days for the remains to cool down enough for survivors and citizens to start sifting through it.

In the end, the Great Chicago Fire wound up claiming 3,000 lives and destroying 17,000 buildings. For the record, there’s nothing connecting the show and the Great Chicago Fire, with the characters never actually making reference to the famous blaze. Not yet, at least.
