Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) is no stranger to trauma. The police officer has had to suffer through the loss of several peer officers and family members, while soldiering on and doing his job as best he can. The Chicago PD season 9 finale may have been the last straw, however.

Voight’s decision-making led to the death of close friend Anna Avalos (Carmela Zumbado), and the character’s guilt looks as though it will inform a lot of his decisions heading into season 10. A new promo by NBC makes it clear that Voight is nowhere close to being over what happened.

While the aforementioned promo contains clips of Chicago Fire and Med, the juiciest revelations come with PD. We not only see Voight mourning over Avalos’s body, but we see him standing at his desk and looking down, clearly upset.

Whatever torment he’s facing internally gets compounded by the voiceover we hear from Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos). She can be heard telling Voight that he’s “not okay” and that he’s going to risk losing “this unit” if he doesn’t make a change.

It’s a devastating revelation, and one that Voight hasn’t had to deal with in quite some time. He’s definitely been close to jeopardizing the integrity and the reputation of the IU (just look at season 9, where he convinced Halstead to blackmail an FBI agent), but to have him crumble so outwardly that his leadership will be brought into question is new territory.

This storyline has been confirmed by the official synopsis for season 10 episode 1, which is titled “Let It Bleed.” The synopsis, according to NBC is as follows:

"Still reeling from the death of informant Anna, Voight faces a new threat as he tries to keep the neighborhood clean; new wrinkles develop in the Upton, Halstead and Voight dynamic; the team gets a new chief."

Voight is going to be sweating through this entire episode, and given that Halstead is already on his way out, it’ll be interesting what the “new wrinkles” that develop between the characters turn out to be.

Next. Will Halstead get killed off?. dark
