Chicago Fire keeps dishing out surprises. While promo photos have confirmed that Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) and Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) make it out of their cliffhanger standoff alive, the drama is also planning to bring some new characters into the fold.

The synopsis for season 11, episode 1 has been released, and it hints at a major addition to the 51. Whether this addition will serve as an ally, an enemy, or simply a recurring character that the cast will have to deal with, remains to be seen.

The aforementioned synopsis reads as follows:

"“Kidd and Severide’s honeymoon is interrupted by a dangerous person from their past; Kidd’s former academy classmate joins Firehouse 51; Brett and Violet reflect on their relationships.”"

The fact that the new addition will be someone who went to the academy at the same time as Kidd has some interesting implications for the direction of the show. It could mean that there will be a rivalry between the two, if they happened to dislike each other at the academy, or it could be a chance for previously good friends to rekindle a relationship in the workplace.

The latter could be an attempt on the part of the writers to balance out the dynamic that Severide has with Wendy Seager (Andy Allo). The two associates are close, and it’s clear that Seager has a bit of a crush on Severide, which has led to some tense moments between her and Kidd.

Will the new addition to the 51 cause Severide to feel slighted?

Chicago Fire has already announced that Jake Lockett will be joining the cast, and it’s safe to assume that he’s the character in question. Lockett’s character is named Sam Carver, and he’s scheduled to be a recurring player throughout season 11. We’ve gotten to see a quick glimpse of him in NBC’s promo photos.

We’re curious to see how he fits into the larger Fire ensemble.
