Law and Order is thriving. The TV franchise has three titles going strong, and for the first time, they will crossover in a multi-part event. It’s been a long-time coming for fans, and is sure to provide them with several unforgettable moments.

Truthfully, the more we hear about the crossover, the more excited we get. Law and Order showrunner Rick Eid recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly to discuss the three-part event, and how it will differ from Dick Wolf crossovers of the past.

When is the Law and Order crossover event?

The biggest distinction Eid provided is that it will not follow a traditional, three-part structure. As we’ve seen with other crossovers like One Chicago, a multi-part story will be passed off from one title to the other, so that each ensemble can contribute. Law and Order, however, will make things more integrated.

"“Unlike most crossovers that we see on network television that are handoffs — one show hands it off to the next show, and then the next show hands it off to the next show — this one is much more integrated”, Eid stated. “Here all the characters are in every hour in an integrated, seamless way.”"

This is a novel way to parcel out the storytelling, and it also means that fans who want to see key characters from each show interact will get more than they bargained for. It’s understandable why most shows tend to keep their ensembles segregated (production wise, it’s much easier), but it is thrilling to consider what all of the Law and Order characters working together will look like.

The good news didn’t stop there. Eid went on to tease the future of the Law and Order franchise, and tells fans that the plan is to bring more eyeballs to the show by telling increasingly more fresh and novel stories, and employing similarly novel storytelling methods (the crossover being one of them).

"“I think we’re always going to be trying to do things that are a little out of the box that elevate our profile and bring more eyeballs to our shows”, he added. “So you know, having said that, as I’m talking, it sounds like the answer is yes [to future crossover events].”"

It’s a good time to be a Law and Order fan.
