It seemed as though we had seen the last of Dr. Hannah Asher (Jessy Schram) when she exited in Chicago Med season six. She battled drug addiction and a complicated relationship with Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss), and decided that getting a fresh start somewhere else was her best bet. At least for a little while…

Asher returned at the tail end of last season, and if the posters for season 8 are anything to go by, then she’s a bigger part of the Med storyline than ever. What happened? Was this a recent change or was Asher’s importance always part of the plan?

When did Hannah Asher leave Chicago Med?

Schram told The List that there were not specific plans to keep her involved, but that the cast and crew made it clear that she would be kept in consideration for future seasons.

"“In the beginning when I was on the show, there were a lot of talks about continuing the storyline”, the actress stated. “The crew on my last day of filming was like, ‘Hey, you’re not dying. We’ll see you again one day’,” she added. “I was completely surprised.”"

Schram’s return was doubly exciting, as she was not only a familiar face, but someone who had undergone massive changes, and was looking to have a sort of fresh start at Gaffney Medical. The challenge of having to convey both was something the actress kept in mind when she got back on the set.

"“To be honest, I had anxiety about how I was going to approach Hannah coming back”, she added. “And to also not lose the essence of somebody that is still working through something. Because addiction never actually goes away when you’re in recovery.”"

Based on the warm reception to Schram’s performance, we’d say she pulled it off. The writers certainly think so, as she’s been placed at the center of the storyline in the upcoming season. Promo photos for season 8 show Asher in the midst of a medical emergency, and plus, her romantic past with Halstead is sure to surface at crucial moments. We can’t wait to watch.
