Anna Avalos (Carmela Zumbado) was a crucial part of Chicago PD season 9. The character seemed like an untrustworthy source when she was first introduced, but it soon became clear that she and Voight (Jason Beghe) had a strong bond.

The duo trusted each other, even if the people around them did not. Sadly, the trust did not last. A misunderstanding between the two characters led to a falling out and a tragic end. Here’s a recap of what went wrong and where the character is, ahead of season 10.

How did Anna Avalos die on Chicago PD?

Avalos’s most notable arc happened when she agreed to infiltrate the organization of local crime boss Javier Escano (Jose Zuniga). She worked alongside Escano, with the intention of bringing him down, but thing did not go according to plan. The crime boss figured out Avalos’s plan, and yet he continued to keep her in his orbit.

Further complicating things was Voight’s decision to withhold crucial evidence from Avalos. He found out that Escano was behind Avalos’s physical assault years earlier, and yet he failed to tell her, fearing it would compromise the mission. Of course, Avalos found out anyway and her trust in Voight crumbled as a result.

Avalos eventually takes her vengeance by killing Escano, and Voight goes after her in an attempt to keep her from doing more damage. He approaches her in the middle of the city and she pulls a gun on him. They have an intense exchange, and an overwhelmed Avalos shoots Voight in the shoulder before getting fatally wounded by Upton (Tracy Spiridakos).

The season 9 finale concludes with Avalos being pronounced dead. Voight is visibly shaken by what happened, as she was yet another person who was close to him that he lost. Worse still, he was partially to blame for what happened. Avalos is gone, but her memory will affect nearly all of Voight’s decisions throughout the upcoming season.

She’s become his cross to bear, and if the promos are anything to go by, she may be the reason Voight jeopardizes his career.
