Chicago Fire has a few surprises up its sleeve for the season 11 premiere. In addition to resolving the cliffhangers from the previous season, the firefighting drama will introduce a new character by the name of Sam Carver (Jake Lockett).

Carver is welcomed to the 51 by Chief Boden (Eamonn Walker), who feels that he’s a perfect fit for the rest of the squad. The rest of the cast seems to be charmed by Carver, except for Lt. Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo).

What’s the deal with Carver and Kidd? How do they know each other? Well, let’s do some digging and find out.

Did Kidd and Carver date on Chicago Fire?

It’s revealed in the season 11 premiere that Carver and Kidd attended the fire academy at the same time. They weren’t particularly close, and judging by their scenes, they didn’t approve of each other’s approaches to the job. Kidd is a traditionalist who likes to do things by the book and spread the workload, while Carver appears to be more of a hero type who goes on instinct.

There’s also the implication that Carver has some sexist tendencies. He makes a subtle dig at Kidd when she reveals how well she’s done in the 51 program, implying that her status as a woman of color is what’s allowed to succeed. It’s still unclear whether this was a misunderstanding on Kidd’s part or a legitimate gripe that will be expanded upon later in the season.

No, Carver and Kidd did not date. Their relationship is strictly a professional one, so fans who have speculated that the new character will tempt the newlywed romantically have nothing to worry about. If anything, the dislike they have for one another will lead to professional issues, instead of personal ones.

Chicago Fire is known for introducing characters who seem confrontational or cagey at first, and later become beloved fixtures within the 51. It’s possible that’s where Carver is headed, and as we often say, only time (and additional scenes with Kidd) will tell.
