Chicago Med dished out one devastating surprise after another during its season 8 premiere. There were character exits and heartbreaking deaths, but the one that really shocked fans happened at the tail end of the episode.

Keep in mind the rest of the post contains huge spoilers for the season premiere, so be warned if you haven’t yet watched it. You may want to experience the return of this character in real time…

Is April Sexton back on Chicago Med?

The person we see return is none other than April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta). The character arrives in earnest to visit Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee), her former husband. The two have a small chat, before April says that she paid her respects to Ethan’s recently deceased father. She also reveals that she may still have feelings for Ethan and the episode ends on a hopeful yet vague note regarding both characters’ futures.

So what gives? Is April back for good or was she just making a much-anticipated cameo? Well, the good news is that the character will be a semi-regular presence throughout season 8. While Med’s premiere kept things ambiguous, showrunners Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider have said that April will return in episode 5 and undergo a transformational character arc.

"“She’s a nurse practitioner now, so she has a whole new skill set”, Schneider explained to TV Line. “She’s really different. She’s grown, professionally and emotionally, and it really compliments the changes that have occurred in Ethan’s emotional life.”"

This is a thrilling development, not only for fans of April but Med in general. The show has seen the exit of numerous characters over the last year, so getting a chance to see more of someone who had unfinished business at Gaffney Medical Center is an undeniable treat. We can’t wait to see how April and Ethan grow together.

As for whether they get back together, romantically speaking, well we’ll just have to wait and see. “It’s complicated, but you will certainly have that question answered”, Frolov teased.
