Chicago PD boss teases ‘powerful’ exit for Halstead in season 10

All eyes are on Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) as the tenth season of Chicago PD gets underway. We know that he’s going to leave the show before the finale, but the cast and crew have done a great job of keeping the details surrounding his exit a secret.

PD showrunner Gwen Sigan shed some much-needed light on the character, and what she has planned for his highly-anticipated exit, during a recent interview with Variety.

Will Halstead be killed off on Chicago PD?

While the specifics of Halstead’s arc were kept under wraps, Sigan did provide some information on what fans can expect, and the guiding themes the writing team kept in mind when they were crafting the season.

"“I’ve been trying to look at it as really giving him something incredibly powerful and impactful”, Sigan noted. “I think he’s really brilliant in this season, what he’s been in, and so it’s nice to see him have that. We tried to stay really true to his character and to what he stands for and what he means for the show and for the unit.”"

The theme of being “broken” is something that will be explored through season 10, which is fitting given the state of IU and Hank Voight (Jason Beghe). The veteran cop is racked with guilt over the death of Anna Avalos (Carmela Zumbado), so it’ll be intriguing to see how he makes peace with what happened, and with who participated i.e. Upton (Tracy Spiridakos).

Upton is another crucial piece of the Halstead puzzle, given that the two are now married. Sigan revealed that Upton will undergo an arc that’s in direct response to Halstead’s departure, and it will push Spiridakos’s acting to previously unseen depths.

"“I think we’ve given Upton a really interesting story this season as to how she deals with this”, the showrunner teased. “She’s someone that is so loyal and so attached to him… This puts her in an interesting spot, and we definitely see how it falls out. That’s been really exciting to write and I think will be something really interesting for Tracy to play.”"

It’s unclear whether death or transfer is what awaits Halstead, but believe that we’re on the edge of our seats, waiting to find out.
