We all love the Halstead brothers. Will (Nick Gehlfuss) is the laid-back one who likes to do things his own way on Chicago Med, and Jay (Jesse Lee Soffer) is the stoic one who prefers to follow the rules to a T on Chicago PD.

Their interactions have always been highlights when One Chicago stages crossover events, as their natural chemistry and mismatched personalities always shine through. Jay is leaving though, which means the window to see another Halstead brothers scene is rapidly closing. Will fans get to see them share the screen one last time?

When is Jay Halstead leaving Chicago PD?

Unfortunately, the answer is no. Chicago Med showrunners Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider sat down with Deadline to discuss the specifics of Jay’s departure, and they made it known that he will not be linking up with his little brother beforehand.

"“We don’t see Jay on [Med] but you do feel the emotional impact of his leaving”, Schneider told the outlet. “We have a moment with Will in terms of that and that he’s missing his brother… and Goodwin is sympathetic.”"

While it’s sad that we won’t get to see Jay and Will in action together, the fact that the latter does have to deal with his brother’s departure sounds like an interesting arc for his character. Will’s had to deal with lots of people leaving Chicago, including his former girlfriend, Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto), and more recently, his friend/coworker Dylan Scott (Guy Lockard).

Loss has become a big part of Will’s life in the past year, so it’s safe to assume that Jay’s absence will be a point of maturation. The showrunners also teased a storyline involving a doctor shortage at Gaffney.

"“[Will’s] hopeful about it”, Frolov noted. “A big part of his storyline initially is going to be about hospital shortages, which may seem a little boring but it has such a huge impact on our doctors when they can’t get the medicine or the equipment that they need.”"

We look forward to seeing this wiser, more contemplative Will Halstead take center stage.
