Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) needs a break. The character has struggled mightily throughout the last few seasons of Chicago Fire, and the season 11 premiere brought all of this struggle into focus. A phone call to Casey (Jesse Spencer) led to the end of their long-distance relationship, as she came to realize that the “stars didn’t align” for them.

Brett is poised to begin a new chapter in her life, and it makes sense, as she’s having to rebuild without the man she thought she was going to settle down with. Will this new chapter play out offscreen? Is the character going to be leaving Chicago for greener pastures?

Thankfully, fans needn’t worry. Brett isn’t going anywhere. The Fire showrunners have made it clear that Brett is going to play a vital role in season 11, and will actually be entertaining some new love interests as storylines unfold.

The showrunners have been known to throw false leads out there, but the amount of time that has been put towards Brett’s big decision, and her subsequent pivot towards work, would feel wasted if the character was hastily written out. Andrea Newman had this to say about Brett’s bigger picture plans:

"“I think she’s come into her own as a character”, she told Parade. “She’s a stronger character and now her feeling is she’s not going to move. No matter how much she loves Casey, she’s not going to move for anybody else. She’s got her life, and she wants to make sure that she’s the one driving it.”"

The concern over whether Brett is leaving is understandable, especially in light of the recent Fire promo that teases “someone won’t make it out.” It’s an ominous promise to make to viewers, and it’s designed to make us cling to the characters that we’d least like to see go.

Given what we know about the future, though, we are almost certain that Brett will make it out in one piece.
