We are all just counting down the clock to when Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) leaves Chicago PD. It’s going to be tough, but it’s been even tougher not knowing when, or why, the character will exit the IU.

Well, we may have caught our first break regarding Halstead’s arc. The promo for season 10, episode 3 teases some major changes for the team, and provides our first look at what could definitely be the reason the character leaves.

Check out the promo below.

When does Jay Halstead leave Chicago PD?

As you can see, Halstead goes to the new precinct chief and appears to share information that he’s kept secret. The promo carefully toes around the specifics of this secret, but it appears as though it could have serious repercussions on the rest of the team. I’m here to tell the truth”, Halstead says. “One bad act doesn’t make you a bad person.”

The “one bad act” could be a reference to last season, when Halstead agreed to bribe an FBI agent so that he could keep himself and his wife, Upton (Tracy Spiridakos), out of prison. He made it clear he didn’t want to go the bribery route, but he did at the behest of Voight (Jason Beghe), and the decision has compromised their dynamic as friends.

Of course, the “bad act” could be referencing actions and events that take place before the events of the show. We learned that Halstead was a sharpshooter for the military, and its possible that one of his past sins has caught up with him.

There’s some credence to support this theory. The synopsis for episode 3, titled “A Good Man”, reads as follows:

"“The team investigates a string of brutal pharmacy robberies, and Halstead connects with one of the victims about their Army careers; Upton suspects there is more to the story and confides in Voight.”"

Whether or not Halstead’s military past is the cause of his exit, it will definitely set the stage for what’s to come. We hope he sticks around as long as possible, but given what’s about go down, it seems unlikely that he will make it to the season finale.
