Chicago PD teases promotions and ‘new titles’ for characters
Chicago PD is on the cusp of some big changes. There’s the impending departure of Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) to consider, but the IU also has a new precinct chief and a new standard for what it can and can’t do.
These changes are going to be reflected in the ranks of the characters. PD showrunner Gwen Sigan recently sat down with NBC to discuss season 10, and she noted that many of the veteran characters will be getting a promotion.
Is Ruzek leaving Chicago PD 2022?
This should come as no surprise to fans who watched the season premiere. The IU team was recognized and awarded for making the largest drug bust in Chicago history, so if any of them were to get promoted, this would be the time.
Sigan told the outlet that characters like Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins), Adam Ruzek (Patrick Flueger) and Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) have maintained the same rank of for several years now, and that the writers have considered making a change and pushing them up to detective.
"“We definitely playing with [the idea]”, Sigan noted. “We haven’t figured out exactly what we plan on doing with it, but it’s something that’s been there for years. I would love to see some movement there and get to see some detective badges come in.”"

Halstead being gone will definitely add to the workload of the rest of the IU, so it would make sense that they would be rewarded with a promotion. He currently holds the rank of detective, so his spot will need to be filled.
It also confirms that characters like Ruzek and Atwater will be sticking around for the long term, as some fans have been worried about who will depart next.
For reference, Voight is the highest ranking officer in the IU, and he’s a Lieutenant. The rest of the team has the rank of officer, including rookie Dante Torres (Benjamin Levy Aguilar).
