We didn’t see this one coming. Chicago Fire made it clear that a character wasn’t going to make it out of this week’s episode alive, and the suspense can from not knowing who it would be. Lots of theories abounded about who the unlucky firefighter was.

Now we know for sure. It wasn’t technically a member of the 51, but it was someone with a close personal connection to the characters that we know and love. He’s someone that one of the other characters knows and loves as well, which is part of what makes his death so shocking. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Who died tonight on Chicago Fire?

The character who died in S11 E3 was Chief Evan Hawkins (Jimmy Nicholas). Hawkins sprung into action at the tail end of the episode when he went to help someone exit a burning building. Sadly, the building collapsed before he was able to complete his mission.

The rest of the 51 team scrambled to get him out of the wreckage, but by the time they got to him, it was too late. Hawkins, and the man he tried to save, were confirmed dead. His girlfriend, Violet (Hanako Greensmith), witnessed the whole thing and was understandably devastated by the news.

Violet tried her best to resuscitate Hawkins, but when she realized that it was no use, she broke out in hysterics and had to be restrained by the rest of the team. It’s a devastating scene, and Greensmith gives one of her best ever performances.

The tragedy of it all, of course, is that Violet and Hawkins had to keep their romance a secret for most of season 10, and because of Hawkins’s recent transfer, they were finally able to be a couple out in public. They were incredibly happy at the end of the season 11 premiere, and it really felt like they were going to make things work.

It’s a testament to the Chicago Fire writing team that they could tell us a character was going to die and still shock us with who it eventually turned out to be.
