The hits just keep on coming. After losing Dr. Dylan Scott (Guy Lockard) in the season 8 premiere, as well as Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) on Chicago PD, the One Chicago franchise has confirmed that it will be axing another main character: Chicago Med star Brian Tee.

Deadline broke the news, which included a statement from Tee and an explanation as to why he no longer wanted to play Dr. Ethan Choi. That said, the actor will continue to play a role in the One Chicago franchise behind the scenes.

Here’s what you need to know about Tee’s departure.

Ethan Choi leaving Chicago Med

Firstly, the why. Tee told the outlet that he wanted to spend more time with his family after acting consistently for over two decades. He’s played Dr. Choi since the inception of Chicago Med, despite his brief absence during season 7.

"“Playing Dr. Ethan Choi on Chicago Med has been such a gift and a blessing”, the actor said. “I am forever grateful to our fans and my colleagues both in front of and behind the camera as I embark on a new journey. I am forever indebted to Dick Wolf, NBC, and Universal Television for choosing me.”"

Tee also teased the fact that his character’s departure will be one for the ages, though he was quiet on the details. “I think the fans are going to absolutely love it”, he added. “It’s going to bring a little bit of the new Ethan and a little bit of the old.”

While it’ll be undoubtedly sad to see Choi go, Tee will remain part of the One Chicago family. He told Deadline that he has plans to direct future episodes of the medical drama, and hasn’t shut down the idea of a Choi comeback.

“I would never say no. Yeah, if the opportunity arose, absolutely”, he teased. “I feel like I’ve been a part of this family and will remain a part of this family, whether it’s on-screen or off-screen. So if there’s an opportunity to bring him back, I would absolutely jump right in.”

We can only hope to see him sooner than later.
