Where is Jay Halstead on Chicago PD? (What happened?)
Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) is nowhere to be found. The veteran Chicago PD character has vanished, and if you happened to miss the episode that explained his departure, you’d be very confused.
In short, Halstead has decided to turn his badge in and leave Chicago to pursue a means of good elsewhere in the world. He told his wife, Upton (Tracy Spiridakos), that he’s been word down by the moral grayness of the Windy City and needs to go somewhere that good and bad are clearly defined.
Where is that, you might ask? Well, it’s not close by, that’s for sure.
Where did Halstead go on Chicago PD?
In the final moments of the episode “A Good Man”, Halstead tells Upton that he plans to travel down to Bolivia to work on a task force. The task force will target drug cartels in the area, which means Halstead will find himself in shootouts and relatively dangerous situations on a regular basis. The silver lining, of course, is that he knows who the bad guys are.
So yeah, Halstead is halfway across the world in Central America, where he will remain for at least eight months. He assured Upton that he will return once his tenure with the task force is done, but it remains to be seen whether this return will actually happen.
Halstead could just as easily get killed during his task force exploits, given how deadly the events around him will be, or, perhaps more tragically for his marriage, he could choose to stay longer and do more good for the area.

Chicago PD hasn’t delved too deeply into Upton’s feelings on the matter yet, but we can imagine that she feels a mixture of things. She’s probably happy that her husband is doing something that makes him feel productive again, but losing him for the better part of a year, when they used to work alongside each other, will be tough.
Upton’s hope, and ours as viewers, is that Halstead completes his task force run in one piece and returns to the show.
