The current season of Chicago Med has become a countdown to when Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) leaves. The character will officially exit in episode 9, which means there are a handful of episodes left to develop his reason for leaving and explain why he felt it necessary to leave the job he held down for nearly a decade.

Given the surprise return of Choi’s ex-fiance, April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta), it’s safe to assume that she has something to do with his reason for leaving. Let’s dig a little bit further into April’s return and what it could mean for the rest of the show.

Is April returning to Chicago Med?

There’s certainly a feeling that Med is developing a resolution for them as a couple. April’s initial departure felt rushed and incomplete, with many fans complaining that there was more to her that needed to be resolved. Now, however, with the knowledge that she’s back in the mix for multiple episodes, it makes more sense.

Brian Tee danced around the possibility that April could be the reason Choi leaves, but based on some of his wording, it definitely seems like it’s a valid theory.

"“Is her return and my exit a coincidence? I don’t know”, he told Deadline. “I know the audience is guessing the navigation in which they’ll take our relationship if there is one, and where they’ll take Dr. Choi as a character. I think the Ethan and April relationship has been so incredible, impactful, and very dramatic. For me, it was so heartwarming to see them together. Knowing they were bringing her back to help along with Ethan’s exit is such a blessing.”"

Choi has been through the ringer the last few seasons, with a separation, a few injuries, and a near death experience to his name. It would be nice to see him round things out and leave on a high note, which is exactly what Tee and the showrunners seem to be hinting at. Frankly, we can’t wait to see it.
