Chicago PD: Will Jesse Lee Soffer cameo in the episode he directs?
Jesse Lee Soffer left Chicago PD in dramatic fashion. He confirmed that he would be stepping away from the show months before his last episode aired, and the suspense over whether he would be killed or transferred lingered over the season 10 premiere.
Fortunately, his character Halstead is alive and well, fighting drug cartels in Bolivia. Halstead may be busy on the other side of the world, but Soffer will remain in the Chicago PD orbit, as he’s set to direct an upcoming season 10 episode.
Will he make a cameo as Halstead in his directorial debut?
Will Jay Halstead return in Chicago PD season 11?
Let’s get the obvious setbacks out of the way. Yes, Halstead is in South America, and he made it clear that he would be there for at least eight months. Yes, seeing him return to Chicago so fast after his exit would sort of invalidate its whole build up and execution. Yes, him rejoining the IU would undermine the emotional tailspin that Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) is currently experiencing.
That said, there are some more realistic ways that Halstead could appear. He could leave a phone message or call Upton on the phone, which is a cameo concept that we saw Chicago Fire use with Casey (Jesse Spencer) last season. He could also contact Upton over Zoom or Skype, which could actually add a lot to the latter’s internal struggle. It’s possible, is what we’re saying.
Unfortunately, it’s not very probable. Soffer has made a point of distancing himself from the role for the time being, and has made it clear that he wants to take a break from solving crimes in the Windy City. A return this soon might give fans the wrong impression in terms of when they can expect him to return (i.e. too soon).

A cameo might also undermine what Soffer is trying to go for as the director of the episode. It’s clear he wants to try his hand at a different facet of the creative process, and agreeing to get back in the Halstead gear would overshadow whatever ideas he would bring to the table as a planner and storyteller.
We’re ecstatic that Soffer is still part of the One Chicago family, and open to the idea of returning, but don’t expect to see him in front of the camera anytime soon.
