Yaya DaCosta is keeping busy. The actress starred in Our Kind of People, then returned for the new season of Chicago Med, and now, it’s been confirmed that she’s joining the cast of yet another hit show.

Deadline reports that DaCosta has been added to the second season of The Lincoln Lawyer. She will be playing Andrea Freemann, a no-nonsense prosecutor and undefeated rival of the show’s titular lawyer, Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo).

When is Yaya DaCosta leaving Chicago Med?

To make matters more complicated for Haller, Freemann is a close friend of his ex-wife, Maggie  (Neve Campbell). The second season will be a loose adaptation of the fourth novel in the Lincoln Lawyer series, The Fifth Witness.

While the specifics of the casting are surprising, the fact that DaCosta has landed such a huge gig on a popular show is not. She has continued to act in a number of different projects since she left Chicago Med at the end of season 6.

In addition to her aforementioned role on Our Kind of People, DaCosta has appeared in the 2015 TV film Whitney, where she played singer Whitney Houston and earned critical praise, as well as theatrical releases like The Nice Guys (2016) and Bolden (2019).

Fans needn’t be worried that DaCosta’s new gig will interfere with her current arc on Chicago Med. She’s been used sparingly throughout season 8, and while the details of her eventual exit are not clear, it’s safe to assume that it coincide with the departure of Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee).

It may be a brief return, but given how unceremoniously DaCosta’s character, April Sexton, was written off the show at the top of season 7, it’s been nice to see her get a more thoughtful lead up to what feels like her official exit.
