Lisseth Chavez was a terrific police officer on Chicago PD. As Vanessa Rojas, she proved that she could hold her own alongside grizzled veterans and withstand any number of onscreen challenges. Her tenure on the show was brief, but it turned out to be beneficial to her in the long run.

Chavez is making a return to the world of TV cops, as she’s joined the cast of ABC’s The Rookie. She will be playing a retooled version of the titular role, as she will be the police trainee that the former rookie John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) trains.

Lisseth Chavez joins The Rookie

TV Line has described the character as having “easy confidence and high marks at the Academy, and her unconventional approach to police work will pose an unexpected challenge for her training officer.”

It’s no coincidence that Chavez’s stint on The Rookie has coincided with a renewed interest in her character on Chicago PD. Showrunner Gwen Sigan was recently asked about the chances of fans getting to see Rojas again, and while not concrete, she did make it clear that it’s a possibility.

"“I would say the door’s always open. I loved her”, Sigan told CinemaBlend. “Lisseth was great. I think that I’ll never say no to anything. Who knows?”"

This is not the first time that the character’s rushed exit has been discussed. Shortly after she was written off the show in 2020, former executive producer Rick Eid told TV Line that the Rojas arc needed more work.

"“It’s always hard to say goodbye to a character”, he added. “We tried to address it in the premiere, but it felt forced. In other words, we’re still working on it.”"

We can only hope that Chavez does’t encounter the same faith with The Rookie and her new character. Based on the crucial role she will play opposite the show’s lead, we can pretty safely assume that she will be around for a while.
