Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) has been doing a lot on Chicago PD lately. Internally, she’s been dealing with the emotional fallout of her husband, Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer), deciding to leave and fight drug cartels in Central America.

Externally, she’s been investigating a case involving human trafficking and the son of the new precinct chief, Sean O’Neal (Jefferson White). It hasn’t been easy, but the character managed to crack a case that tied all the way back to her superiors. Now what?

Are we watching the tail end of Upton’s time on Chicago PD? Let’s discuss.

Is Tracy Spiridakos leaving Chicago PD?

Upton’s arc has been defined by loss for most of season 10. It makes sense, given how close she and Halstead were, and how his decision to leave not only left her without a normal presence in her life, but put her in a position where she would be constantly worrying for Halstead’s life.

Some fans have even begun to question whether Upton will be leaving PD, in an effort to not only maintain the character’s marriage with Halstead but to make room for newer characters, like the recently minted rookie, Torres (Benjamin Levy Aguilar).

While it would make sense on some fronts, namely; the maintaining of the Upton and Halstead relationship, it’s not going to be an exit we see anytime soon. Tracy Spiridakos has not hinted at any such plans, and has actually seen the Halstead departure as a chance to develop Upton in ways that we previously haven’t seen.

The actress told Devdiscourse that Upton is going to have to dig deep to get through the tough emotions she’s going through, but that she’s will ultimately come out of this period stronger.

"“She’s a badass, but she’s also really vulnerable and she’s very unapologetic about who she is”, she added. “And she’s got a very strong moral compass.”"

Looking at Chicago PD as a whole, Upton’s departure would be a massive loss, as the show is still dealing with the consequences of writing Halstead off the show. Getting rid of another character would not only cheapen Halstead’s exit, but further the sense of loss that the fans are currently feeling.
