Chicago Med has had a lot of cast turnover in the past year. We’ve seen characters be forced to give up their job at Gaffney, quit out of guilt, or decide that working in the Windy City was no longer for them.

The medical drama has had so much turnover, in fact, that we’re emotionally preparing ourselves for the departure of another mainstay, Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee). In a rare case of both gaining and losing a character, Med has brought back April (Yaya DaCosta) to narratively explain why Ethan is leaving.

The door has been left open for several characters to return, but there are some who won’t be seen anywhere near Gaffney anytime soon. Here’s a quick rundown of the ones who have said goodbye for good.

Is Stevie Hammer in Chicago Med season 8?

Dr. Stevie Hammer (Kristen Hager) was poised to step into the role that Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) left behind. It was a clear substitution, right down to the fact that Hammer was introduced in the episode that Manning exited. Over the course of season 7, though, Hammer proved to be a compelling character on her own.

It seemed as though she’d be around for a while, but due to the pregnancy of star Kristen Hager, it was decided that Hammer be written off the show. It seemed to be a mutual decision, with no ill will developing between Hager and the writers, but given how brief her stint was, it’s safe to assume she won’t be a candidate to return in season 8.

Is Patrick Choi in Chicago Med season 8?

Patrick Choi (François Chau) was another character who made a big impression on season 7 viewers. As the father of Dr. Ethan Choi, he made it clear that their dynamic was strained, and they struggled to connect whenever they were around each other.

Sadly, Patrick passed away before the two men were ever really able to sit down and reconcile their differences. Ethan was struck by his father’s passing to such an extent that he later tells Dr. Charles (Oliver Platt) that it influenced his decision to get back with April.

Of course, given Patrick’s deceased status, he will not be coming back to Gaffney anytime soon.

Is Jason Wheeler in Chicago Med season 8?

Jason Wheeler (Jürgen Hooper) was a tragic case on Chicago Med. He was a major presence throughout season 2, during which time it was made clear that he struggled with both drugs and alcohol.

His vices often got the best of him, like when Dr. Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) had to restrain him while he was getting sick, and sadly, when he decided to jump off the tenth floor of Gaffney. He was killed on impact, bringing an end to his life and his time on the show.
