Chicago Fire has been all about change in season 11. Characters have died, relationships have ended, and those we thought we knew in a certain way have matured and taken on different traits.

It’s a testament to the show that each of these changes have been compelling in their own right, with many of them hinting at future storylines and fresh directions for the cast. That being said, it seems like the writers aren’t done surprising us.

The episode scheduled for December 7, 2023 will seemingly come with a surprise appearance from a returning character.

Who is returning to Chicago Fire season 11?

While details remain scarce, given that the episode will mark the mid-season finale, and the writers want to keep as many surprises concealed as possible, we have been given the official synopsis via NBC. It reads as follows:

"“Severide struggles with the cost of helping Det. Pryma with the Martucci case. Gallo campaigns for Herrmann to represent 51 at the National Firefighter’s Association’s Winter Conference. A familiar face makes a shocking return.”"

Not only a familiar face, but one who will make a “shocking” return. That’s pretty exciting news, given the possibilities that are hinted at. The writers could go lots of different directions with this reveal, including bring back Casey (Jesse Spencer) for a single episode cameo.

It would do wonders for the “shocking” aspect, and fuel the internal struggles that Brett (Kara Killmer) has had moving on from the firefighter. Chicago Fire showrunner Derek Haas has also teased some major revelations during season 11, as it will mark his final season at the helm.

Conversely, bringing Casey back would serve to undo some of the character development that’s been dedicated to Brett so far. She’s grown a lot since breaking up with Casey, and she recently went on her first date, so while a Casey reunion would be exciting, it might be the wrong time to drop that bomb on both her and the viewers.

There’s a decent chance that it’s an antagonist from a previous season, who could potentially cause issues for the 51 during the second half of the season. There’s any number of people who could fit the bill, with season 10’s Emma Jacobs (Caitlin Carver) being the most recent example.

Who do you think the familiar face will be?
