Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) is going to the end of the line on Chicago PD. She’s sunk her teeth into the case of suspected killer Sean O’Neal (Jefferson White), and she’s made it abundantly clear over the past few weeks that she won’t rest until justice is served.

What is the cost for this dedication, though? Upton’s approach to the case has no doubt been shaped by the exit of her husband, Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer), who she says has done a bad job of staying in touch with her.

Is the show setting us up for a tragedy on Upton’s part come the fall finale? Let’s investigate.

Is Tracy Spiridakos leaving Chicago Fire in season 10?

It’s been confirmed that the resolution of the Sean O’Neal case will happen in the fall finale, which airs Wednesday, December 7. The promo for the episode teases some intense moments with the IU and Upton, in particular, who has been convinced of Sean’s guilt from day one.

The emphasis on Upton’s crumbling marriage has made it difficult for fans to watch, given how beloved her and Halstead have been over the years. It’s clearly bothering the former, and has led to some moments of genuine risk on her part when it comes to field work.

The possibility of her dying while estranged from Halstead would be utterly devastating, and one of the most shocking moves Chicago PD has ever pulled. It would undoubtedly be powerful, since Upton’s own past with abuse have dovetailed into her passion to nab Sean.

It would also be a gigantic bummer. PD has tried hard to rebound following the departure of the fan favorite Halstead, and it’s already taken some narrative risks by asserting that he’s done a bad job of communicating with Upton. The idea of not only killing Upton off, but doing so before there was a reconciliation between the two, is a bridge too far. Fans would be (rightfully) upset.

So while Upton is put in a few life-threatening situations in the fall finale, rest assured that she will come out of it in one piece.
