4 most shocking Chicago Med, Fire and PD exits in 2022
One Chicago has reached the decade mark for two of its shows, Chicago Fire and PD, and Med is only a few seasons away from doing the same. Not many franchises stick around that long, and when they do, changes are bound to occur.
One Chicago has done a masterful job of handling these changes, particularly when it comes to the exits and introductions of characters. We’ve had to say goodbye with some of the biggest people in the franchise in 2022, and it wasn’t easy.
That said, most of them were done well. Here’s a recap of some of the most notable One Chicago exits that we got during the 2022 season.
Why did Evan Hawkins leave Chicago Fire?
We’re going to start with the obvious and the most shocking. Evan Hawkins (Jimmy Nicholas) was primed to take on a larger role in Chicago Fire, especially since his relationship with Violet (Hanako Greensmith) was better than ever. What happens one episode later? Boom: Hawkins dies trying to save a civilian from a burning building.
It was arguably the biggest death on the show since Otis (Yuri Sartarov), and it sent Violet, along with the Chicago Fire fanbase, into a tailspin of sadness. Was it tough to watch? Yes, but it made for great TV.
Why did Dylan Scott leave Chicago Med?
Dylan Scott (Guy Lockard) suffered a fate that was different from Hawkins, though similarly tragic. He made it out of a burning building in one piece, but his struggle with an armed assailant led him to accidentally shoot an undercover cop that he was trying to protect. What’s worse? He had some romantic feelings for the cop, nicknamed “Jo” (Riley Voelkel).
Scott was shaken beyond belief by what happened, and by the end of the season 8 premiere, he told Dr. Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) that he was going to have to leave Gaffney Medical Center and start over somewhere else. Sad to see him go, but we understand.

Why did Jay Halstead leave Chicago PD?
The idea of Chicago PD without Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) seemed inconceivable, and yet that’s a reality we had to adjust to in 2022. The veteran officer quit the force after deciding that he was done making morally compromised decisions. He hightailed it down to Central America in an attempt to regain a clear sense of “right” and “wrong.”
While Halstead’s departure was announced ahead of time, it was still suspenseful to see what would eventually cause it, and whether or not he’d be killed off. Thankfully he wasn’t, meaning there’s still a chance he could return in the future.
Why did Ethan Choi leave Chicago Med?
The one that’s incoming, but we know it’s going to devastate us. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) is another legacy character in the One Chicago franchise, so seeing him walk away from Gaffney in an effort to bring medical care to chose who need it is both sad and inspirational. Never mind the fact that he overcame some major setbacks (personal and professional) to come out the other side a more happy, content person.
Did we mention he’s getting married to April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) again? A departure that was also announced ahead of time, it’s one that we will be mulling over for the rest of the winter.
