Things don’t look good for Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) as we look forward to Chicago Fire in 2023. The character was last seen underneath the rubble of house that had just exploded, and that was seconds after being near a massive explosion. The same goes for Fire newcomer Sam Carver (Jake Lockett).

Are they dead? Do they make it out of the house in one piece? Well, unfortunately, the fall finale wrapped up without telling us either way. We’re left as concerned as Severide (Taylor Kinney) was in the immediate aftermath of the explosion.

Is Miranda Rae Mayo leaving Chicago Fire?

Fire showrunner Derek Haas shed some light on the situation during a recent interview with NBC. While he played coy about the fate of the characters (Stella in particular), he did hint at where the story will go once it resumes.

“That is a big, big, question when Episode 10 comes back”, Haas acknowledged. “Did anyone survive this? Severide’s ‘gonna rush right in to the building, stepping over debris and into the fog, and we’re ‘gonna be right there with him as we try to figure out if anyone survived.”

All signs point to Stella coming out alive. She’s such a major part of the show, and had the writers truly wanted to kill her character off, they would have made it very clear what happened. The fact that the explosion and the aftermath is portrayed so ambiguously is an indicator that it’s merely a cliffhanger meant to keep us on edge (and truth be told, it worked).

The fate of Carver is a bit more up in the air, given that he’s not as important to the crux of the show, but killing off a relative newcomer so soon after doing it to Evan Hawkins (Jimmy Nicholas) would come off a bit repetitive.

While death is unlikely to claim either Stella or Carver, Haas did tease that the explosion will play a huge part in the overarching storyline for season 11. “The ramifications of this are ‘gonna hang over the second half of the season”, he revealed. We can’t wait to see how.
