Chicago PD has been doing a great job of exploring its established characters in season 10. There have been some definite growing pains, like Voight (Jason Beghe) and the guilt he felt over letting an informant die, or Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) and her inability to move past the departure of her husband, Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer).

The fall finale did what most great stopping points do, which is focus on the people we know and love and affirm why we root for them in the first place. As we look forward to the rest of season 10, though, showrunner Gwen Sigan hints at some notable changes for the IU.

Chicago PD season 10 new characters

Sigan told TV Insider that PD will not only bring back the main antagonist of the the season so far, Sean O’Neal (Jefferson White), but a whole roster of new characters who will assist and challenge the established cops.

"“There will be [more multi-episode arcs], yes”, she revealed. “We have a new multi-episode case coming up in Episode 12. You’ll meet some new characters. And then we also have some great standalone episodes for each of our characters coming up.”"

This is another sign of PD doing their best to stay current in light of Halstead’s departure. They have already brought in rookie officer Dante Torres (Benjamin Levy Aguilar) as a literal replacement and now fans will be meeting people that makes Torres feel like an old friend.

PD isn’t alone in this approach. As the three One Chicago titles near/surpass the decade mark, they have to contend with actors wanting to step away or take reduced parts. In the case of both Med’s Brian Tee and the aforementioned Jesse Lee Soffer, actors have also expressed interest in working behind the camera as directors.

It’s unclear how permanent these new characters will be in season 10, but the writers have proven that they can handle the integration process smoothly and with the eye towards the most satisfying drama.
