Chicago PD has had its focus on Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) and her marriage to Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) in season 10. It’s been prevalent in nearly episode, which means there’s been less attention paid to the rest of the IU.

According to PD showrunner Gwen Sigan, the focus is going to shift during the second half of the season, and turn more towards the personal lives of Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger).

Things have been complicated for the partners since last season, and there’s still a ton that they have to work through as they try to co-parent Makayla (Ramona Edith Williams).

Are Burgess and Ruzek back together on Chicago PD?

Sigan told TV Line that the physical and psychological trauma Burgess has gone through in recent years is starting to catch up with her, as evidenced by the episode “Under the Skin”, in which her hand was visibly shaking. The manifestation of this trauma is going to lead her down a path of denial that’s going to invariably lead to other issues.

The decision to eventually deal with her trauma, which will reportedly take place on the back end of the season, will be the change that Burgess needs to strengthen the relationships in her life, with Ruzek being at the top of the list.

“He’s like her partner in life, and when you get out of some of that trauma, it’s about forming new attachments again”, Sigan revealed. “So we’ll get to see that she can have some more strength in those relationships and clarity, and how much they’ve been there for her.”

It’ll be nice to see the two characters rebuild their trust in one another after the incident involving Makayla’s kidnapping splintered it. Things have improved since their differing approaches to the kidnapping led to some time apart, but it’s obvious that there’s still lots of ground to make up if they want to maintain a healthy family unit.

When asked what Burgess’ arc was for season 10, Sigan plainly stated: “To strengthen those bonds she has with her daughter, and with Ruzek.”
