Brett (Kara Killmer) is putting in the work on Chicago Fire. She took her fate into her own hands when she broke up with Casey (Jesse Spencer), and decided that a long distance relationship with the former 51 employee wasn’t going to cut it.

To her credit, she’s done a good job of moving on. She’s stayed busy at work, and even gone on a few dates. Still, the nagging presence of Casey remains. Is she going to be able to move past her one time boyfriend?

Well, Chicago Fire showrunner Derek Haas shed some light on the splintered romance during a recent interview with TV Insider.

Are Brett and Casey getting back together on Chicago Fire?

Haas acknowledges that the writers have tried to show the ways in which Brett is moving on, but at the same time dropping hints that she may be trying to convince herself that she’s more “over it” than she seems.

"“She’s gonna have some magical times dating”, the showrunner revealed. “But there’s always the looming question of, was Casey the love of her life? And will that make it impossible to find that level of love again?”"

It’s a valid question, and a relatable topic. Brett and Casey seemed as though they would get married and settle down much like Stella (Miranda Rae Mayo) and Severide (Taylor Kinney) have, but external forces made it so that it couldn’t be.

It’s clear that Casey still has feelings for her, as evidenced by the fact that he wanted to stay together, but it makes sense that Brett would feel the need to cut things off before it became an emotional burden. Long distance is not easy, especially when one previously saw their significant other every day.

Will Casey’s return be the thing that complicates Brett’s current fling? Well, according to Haas’ showrunner partner, Andrea Newman, the door is always open for the character to make a brief appearance.

“Casey is such a presence on the show still. I think in the last few episodes, every one of ’em had a reference to him in some way or another, large and small”, she pointed out. “Jesse’s never far from our minds and Casey as a character’s never far from 51’s minds. We love him. We’ll have him back anytime.”

Here’s hoping we get a Casey sighting sooner than later.
