One Chicago Wednesday was in jeopardy for a while. The franchise had carved out a nice three hour block every week, but their parent network, NBC, announced that they were considering ditching the 10 pm time slot and giving it back to affiliate stations.

If the decision had gone through, then Chicago PD would not have been able to keep its normal time slot, and the entire One Chicago lineup would have been changed around to accommodate this change.

Thankfully, this won’t be the case. NBC has confirmed that they will keeping their 10 pm time slot intact for the foreseeable future.

What night does Chicago Fire air on NBC?

Susan Rovner, the Chairman of Entertainment Content, at NBCUniversal Television, confirmed to Deadline that the network will be maintaining the time slot for the 2023-24 season. This will be a boon to Dick Wolf-produced shows in particular, as both the One Chicago and Law & Order titles would have been subject to entire night shifts and potential ratings drops. Both franchises are among the network’s biggest successes.

While there’s nothing to suggest that Chicago PD or Med could not have performed well on another night, there’s a long history of shows that have done well, only to see their fanbase dwindle with a change in scheduling. This could have easily occurred, despite the steady and impressive ratings for both. (Fire would have likely remained untouched.)

Another issue that the time slot change would have brought about is the possibility of having crossover events. Part of the appeal of seeing all three One Chicago shows carry on the same storyline is seeing it play out over three consecutive hours of television. It would lose a lot of its impact if fans only got two/thirds of the story on a given night, and the rest on another night.

The same goes for Law & Order, which recently staged its biggest crossover event yet.

It remains to be seen whether NBC will ditch the 10 pm slot at some point down the line, but at least One Chicago fans can take solace in the fact that Wednesdays will remain untouched for another year or two.
