One Chicago delivered the goods in 2022. From heartwarming character moments to shocking plot developments, Chicago Med, Fire, and PD knew what fans wanted and still managed to make each new episode feel fresh and unexpected.

Part of the unexpectedness, of course, comes from the fact that certain characters died. 2022 was a tough year for a handful of One Chicago stalwarts, and we thought with the new year around the corner, there was no better way to tribute them than with a post.

Here’s the bronze, silver and gold medal winners for shocking One Chicago deaths this year!

Bronze Medal: Milena ‘Jo’ Jovanovic (Chicago Med)

‘Jo’ Jovanovic (Riley Voelkel) was not on Chicago Med for very long, but she left a big impression on both fans and Dr. Dylan Scott (Guy Lockard). Given her complicated position as an undercover cop, it makes sense that Dylan would try to protect her, but it was the romantic component of their relationship that made it especially tragic when Jo was shot and killed.

To make matters worse, it was Dylan’s attempt to stave off an attacker that accidentally led to her getting killed. It was a devastating event to open season 8 with, and it led to Dylan leaving Gaffney to pursue a career elsewhere.

Silver Medal: Chief O’Neal (Chicago PD)

O’Neal (Michael Gaston) was a character who had been around the precinct for several years, but it wasn’t until he was appointed chief that he became a major player. At first it seemed as though he had a tough but fair approach to handling the IU, but things took a turn for the worse when his son Sean (Jefferson White) was linked to the murder/kidnapping of several women.

Chief O’Neal tried to fight the allegations, and help his son evade capture, but in the end, the guilt proved too much for him. He shot Sean in the head then took his own life before the IU could arrive on the scene. Sean was able to survive, but Chief O’Neal was gone for good. A tragic end we didn’t see coming for a Chicago PD side character.

Gold Medal: Evan Hawkins (Chicago Fire)

This one destroyed us. Evan Hawkins (Jimmy Nicholas) has become a fan favorite throughout season 10, and his relationship with Violet (Hanako Greensmith) further solidified the belief that he would be around for a while. Then, like that, Hawkins tried to rescue a civilian from a burning building and failed to make it out alive.

The impact of Hawkins’s death was felt through Violet, but fans were similarly devastated, as evidenced by the social media outpouring after the episode aired. Hawkins’s legacy can still be felt onscreen, as will go down as one of the most heartbreaking in franchise history.
