Chicago Med has parted ways with a ton of characters in season 8. It’s been a period of change for the Gaffney Medical staff, and the departure of one invariably leads to the arrival of another. It was only a matter of time before we were introduced to a new character.

According to Deadline, T.V. Carpio will be joining the medical drama when it returns in January. The actress will be playing Grace Song, a doctor brought in to fill the void left by Ethan Choi (Brian Tee). While the details surrounding Song’s history are hazy, the outlet does confirm that she will “shake things up” for the established characters.

Song’s introduction will be a direct result of the fall finale, in which Jack Dayton (Sasha Roiz) told Dr. Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) that he bought controlling interest in Gaffney, and will make a number of changes to the way the place runs. It appears as though Song will be implemented at the behest of Dayton, so it’s very likely that she will struggle to gain the trust of people like Dr. Goodwin and Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss).

Carpio may not be a household name but she’s amassed an impressive career since making her screen debut in 2002. She appeared, appropriately, in an episode of the One Chicago-adjacent show Law & Order, before going on to have supporting roles in The Client List, Rizzoli and Isles, and Bloodline.

On the big screen, Carpio is best known for her role as Prudence in the 2007 cult hit Across the Universe. Fans of the Beatles and musicals will remember her striking rendition of “I Wanna Hold Your Hand”. She also starred opposite Bradley Cooper in the 2011 thriller Limitless.

It’s worth noting that the last few characters who have been introduced on Chicago Med have left the show within a season. Dr. Stevie Hammer (Kristen Hager), Dr. Dylan Scott (Guy Lockard), and Pamela Blake (Sarah Rafferty) are gone, so it’ll be interesting to see if Song is a character who breaks through and sticks around or continues the show’s recent trend.
