Chicago PD has had mortality on the brain. The dangers of the job have never been more apparent, and the psychological (as well as physical) trauma that comes with the job is starting to manifest in the characters.

It’s been fascinating to watch, but dealing with such heavy themes means there will be invariably be those who need to walk away. Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) turned his badge in because he could no longer tell the difference between the good guys and the bad guys, so it’s only a matter of time before it happens to someone else.

Here’s a rundown of the characters who may decide to make their exit in 2023.

Is Sean O’Neal still on Chicago PD?

Sean O’Neal (Jefferson White) is one of the chilling and reprehensible villains that Chicago PD has had in a long time. His dynamic with Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) made for some of the best dramatic moments in season 10 (thus far), and his near-death encounter with his father was a genuinely shocking twist.

Still, as important as Sean has been to season 10, there’s no way he will continue his reign of terror into next season. Given that he was shot in the head and nearly killed, not to mention in custody for a series of ghastly offenses, we imagine he will be dealt with permanently over the next few episodes.

Is Dante Torres on Chicago PD?

Dante Torres (Benjamin Levy Aguilar) is definitely being set up as a long term addition to the team. He was groomed by Halstead to work for IU, and has proven himself to be a fearless officer in the field. That said, it’s still too early to tell if Torres will connect with audiences to a point where he is one of the show’s untouchable figures.

There hasn’t been a ton of delving into his character, given his status as a rookie, so it seems like the second half of season 10 will determine if he makes it to the next season. We have our fingers crossed that we won’t be saying goodbye, though, as we think he has lots of potential.

Is Jay Halstead still on Chicago PD?

Yes, technically he left in season 10, but Halstead told Upton that he’d been back within a span of eight months. If we go by the normal Chicago PD timeline, that means he’s due to show back up in 2023. It’ll be great to see Halstead and Upton back together, but unless the former decides to be a cop again (highly unlikely), then he will leave yet again.

It’s tough to envision what will happen with Halstead upon his return. He could divorce Upton, if it’s determined that they can no longer make their marriage work long distance. He could also be killed off, depending on whether Soffer wants to keep the door open for the character’s return down the line. Either way, it feels like the next goodbye we have with Halstead will be the last.
