Chicago PD boss: There are ‘no plans’ for Halstead return
We all want to see Jay Halstead return. The Chicago PD character is beloved by fans and critics alike, and given that the actor who plays him, Jesse Lee Soffer, has stayed on with the production as a director, we thought there was a pretty good chance he would pop up in a cameo.
Unfortunately, the speculation has been halted. During a recent interview with TV Insider, PD showrunner Gwen Sigan discussed the future of the character and why there are currently “no plans” to bring him back to Chicago.
Here’s what Sigan had to say about everybody’s favorite ex-cop.
Is Jay Halstead returning to Chicago PD?
The showrunner felt it was important to set up a few ground rules in terms of what fans can expect heading into season 10’s second half. There’s been a lot of focus on Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) and the troubles she’s had moving on with her life now that Halstead is in another country, and this plot thread will continue to be explored.
“We’ll definitely hear about what’s going on, for sure, and tell stories about that absence”, Sigan confirmed. It makes sense, given how much drama has been gained from the situation, and how much its enriched the character of Upton over the last handful of episodes.
The next question, of course, was whether Upton’s frustrations would be rewarded (or at least, concluded) with an appearance from her estranged husband in the finale. It’s here that Sigan felt a need to shut down the Halstead rumors and state, definitively, that he will not being coming back to the Windy City anytime soon.

“There are no plans to see him on screen, but we’re very excited that he is coming back and directing one”, She explained. “I think he’s gonna really enjoy it. I think it will be a nice opportunity for him.”
It’s sad to have to come to grips with the fact that Halstead is firmly out of the picture, but it makes sense. Upton will have to learn to grow from his departure, and Voight (Jason Beghe), who often struggled to maintain a mentor-student relationship with Halstead due to his corrupt antics, will have to learn from the mistakes that led to the latter quitting.
We have no doubt that the rest of season 10 will be riveting, despite there being no Halstead.
