Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) was the topic of conversation heading into 2023. The Chicago Fire mainstay was caught in a devastating explosion during the mid-season finale, and it was not clear whether she would make it out in one piece.

Fortunately, the opening moments of the winter premiere confirm that she was alive and kicking. Granted, she took some shrapnel in the side, and had to undergo surgery but she was ultimately able to return to work in a few weeks time.

Still, the explosion and near-death experience has left a toll on Kidd. She now has a physical scar as a result of what happened, and she even confides in Carver (Jake Lockett) that she can’t stop thinking about what happened. Is the character thinking about hanging up her gear at the 51?

Does Stella Kidd leave Chicago Fire?

The concern over Kidd’s potential exit is understandable. The character has been around for years, but there’s been a trend among the One Chicago shows of veterans deciding to leave the city. We recently saw it happen with Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) on Chicago PD, and last year saw it happen with Casey (Jesse Spencer) on Chicago Fire.

Mayo is continuing to snag roles outside of the show, including a lead in the upcoming comedy Daddy, so it’s obvious that she wants to continue to challenge herself and play characters that aren’t Kidd.

All things considered, though, Kidd isn’t going anywhere. The character has been positioned as one of the show’s two anchors alongside her husband, Severide (Taylor Kinney), and the writers would not have done so if there was any doubt that Mayo would stick around.

Besides, if the show really wanted to give Kidd the boot, they wouldn’t have hinged an entire mid-season cliffhanger on her nearly dying and recovering. It wouldn’t make sense to stage an event like that, right before a character decides to leave.

Because she survived, we can assume that she will be safe for the foreseeable future.
