Herrmann (David Eigenberg) is a reliable member of the 51. He always shows up to work and has a relatively uncomplicated home life in comparison to the rest of the Chicago Fire cast. All that has changed, though. Herrmann had to take care of his children after his wife Cindy (Robyn Coffin) said she felt ill.

As the episode “A Guy I Used to Know” wore on, it became obvious that Cindy’s condition was getting worse. The couple decided to see a doctor, and the news they got was devastating: Cindy has lung cancer. Despite never smoking a day in her life, the character will have to deal with this life-changing news.

What’s next for Cindy? Is she going to die as a result of her diagnosis?

Is Cindy leaving Chicago Fire?

Well, for one, Cindy has been a presence on Chicago Fire since the first episode. She played a more prominent role early on, especially when her and Herrmann lost their home to forclosure and had to move in with her parents.

Despite not being seen as often in recent seasons, Cindy remains an anchor for Herrmann off screen. They have five children together, and a loving relationship that rarely (if ever) runs into complications. The decision to give the character lung cancer is a bold one for the writers, and it will undoubtedly impact the Herrmann family moving forward.

The synopsis for the January 18 episode, “How Does It End?” suggests that the path for both Herrmann and Cindy is unclear. It confirms that one of the storylines for the episode will be about Herrmann struggling to come to grips with Cindy’s diagnosis, and having to make a tough decision regarding his family life and the precedence it will take over his time at the 51.

From an outside perspective, it would be a good way to write Herrmann off the show for a couple of episodes, but Eigenberg has not made any comments or official statements that would suggest he wants time off. If anything, his commitment to Chicago Fire has been so pronounced that he prioritized it over the 2021 Sex and City revival And Just Like That.

Because of the character’s relatively solid standing with the show, we believe that Cindy will be able to beat her diagnosis, and that the lung cancer storyline will simply be a means of giving her and her husband some gut-wrenching emotional moments.
