Why did Atwater’s dad go to prison on Chicago PD?
Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) thought it was going to be a regular case. The Chicago PD vet was securing the perimeter at the funeral of a crime boss, and who did he spot but his own father, Lewis Atwater (Erik LaRay Harvey).
Kevin has been estranged from his father since before he was a cop, and to make matters worse, Lewis turns out to be involved in the case that gets unraveled throughout “Long Lost.” It turns out that Lewis witnessed the funeral ambush that kicked off the episode, and was friendly with some of them from his time in prison.
Who plays Atwater’s father on Chicago PD?
Kevin decides to use Lewis in a gambit to arrest the shooters. He incorporates his father into a sting operation involving Dante Torres (Benjamin Levy Aguilar), and while dangerous, he manages to pull it off and put the criminal parties behind bars.
One thing lingers during the sting operation, though, and that’s why Lewis was in prison to begin with. Kevin admits that he lost touch with his father shortly after he was locked up, and became something of a father figure to his younger siblings. There’s some definite resentment, and it all comes exploding out of him at the end of the episode.

Kevin asks Lewis what he did to get put away, and the latter pulls back the curtain. He agreed to be a getaway driver for some shady individuals because he was desperate to get some cash and provide for his family, but he was the only one caught so the entire thing was pinned on him. He served a lengthy sentence as a result, and neglected to put Kevin’s name on the visitor’s list.
When Kevin demanded to know why he wasn’t allowed to visit, Lewis admits a painful truth: he didn’t want his son to see him like that. He preferred Kevin to maintain the image he had prior to the arrest. The two men reconcile, and hopefully take the necessary steps towards building a relationship in the future.
