Herrmann (David Eigenberg) is going to be undergoing some major changes. The character found out that his wife Cindy (Robyn Coffin) has lung cancer, and together they’re going to have to figure out how to combat it.

In the episode leading up to Cindy’s diagnosis, Herrmann was called upon to watch their five kids. He clearly had a hard time juggling dad duties with firefighter duties, and now that Cindy’s cancer will be taking precedence, it’s unclear how the former will manage to do both effectively.

Is Herrmann going to be stepping away from the 51?

Is David Eigenberg leaving Chicago Fire in 2023?

This is not the first time that Herrmann has considered putting the firehose down. In season 10 he was shaken to find that a boy had been trapped in the backseat of a car following a crash. The boy made it out okay, but the parallels between the boy and Herrmann’s own kids led him to question whether he still had what it takes to save lives.

The thing is, these types of arcs are generally incorporated into a show when an actor wants to leave, or at the very least do another show will remaining part of the cast. David Eigenberg is the complete opposite, however. He made sure to prioritize Fire during the making of And Just Like That, and he didn’t miss a single episode despite being a huge character on the Sex and the City spinoff.

While Herrmann may be taken away from the action somewhat, we anticipate that he will stay on and be a crucial presence in all of the upcoming episodes. It seems as though the writers are not giving the character an exit plan so much as giving him a storyline that tests the character and actually gives him more than he’s had in quite a few seasons.

The same goes for Cindy, who has been a recurring presence since the pilot but has never really gotten a chance to take center stage. The Herrmanns are going to go through some tough times but they aren’t going anywhere.
